Smile Team: The team will be working at Leo and Bethany's school over the coming four months, as well as Kigezi High School and Rugarama Hospital. Please pray for them as they settle into life in Kabale and begin work at their placements.

Craig: Craig has a week of marking A'level exams for the UK this week and completing his next OU assignment. Pray that the internet will be reliable, as we've had alot of problems with connection over the last few weeks.

Claudia: Claudia is writing some short stories to assist parents to tell children they are HIV+. Please pray for her as she develops these resources and for the story time that will begin at Rugarama Hospital this week.

Leo and Bethany: Please pray for them as they settle back into school.

The Bakiga Community Project

Pray for Craig as he continues to work on the paperwork for NGO application. Pray for wisdom and discernment and peace in all the decision making. Pray for patience as the process gets underway and the various boxes have to ticked.
Pray for the board in their role of overseeing the project and the support that they are able to give Craig in his role as director.
Pray for Emmy and George in the day to day running of the project, as they oversee the water engineers and other project members.

Pray for Craig as he has begun teaching on the Primary Upgrading course at NTC and also at Kabale University.

Pray for Claudia as she is at home more these two months, as the children are on holiday. Pray for creativity in occupying the kids.

Claudia is meeting with the HIV committee at Rugarama Hospital on Tuesday.

Craig and Emmy meet with councellors on Friday to discuss expanding water projects in the district. Pray for a productive meeting and postive contacts to be made.

Leo is sick this week with Strep Throat - pray for a speedy recovery. Pray also for good health for the rest of the family, to fight off coughs and colds.

Bethany is doing well going to school without Leo, a few months ago it would have been a real problem, so praise God for her increased confidence and independance.

Pray for students at the NTC who attended Chapel on Sunday. Claudia preached on Relationships (based on the ideas of True Love Waits). Pray for students as they process the ideas and look to make changes in their lives.

Week of Monday 19th September

This week Craig and Claudia are back teaching at NTC. Craig also continues to teach at Kabale Uni and has a busy week with a trip to Bwindi (not to see the gorillas :-( ) to meet with community leaders and local councillor about a potential water project. Please pray for Craig as he meets new students this week and balance the project work with teaching. Pray also for safety as he travels to Bwindi, as the road is not that great. Pray also the the meeting would be productive and useful in making decisions about how to press forward with the provision of water in the Bwindi area.

Claudia has a number of meetings this week at NTC and also at Rugarama Hospital. She is also leading a workshop on Peer counselling at Bishop Barham Christian College on Saturday. Pray also as she is nearly finished the 3 year curriculum, pray for continued enthusiam, creativity and cultural sensitivity as she writes.

Continue to pray for the children as they attend school and Praise God that Bethany seems to be enjoying school life a bit more now :-)

Please pray for Craig and Emmy as they continue to move the water project forward - meeting with councillors; visiting potential springs to be built and repaired and make decisions about the way forward. Pray also for the engineers that engage in the practical work of constuction - that they would work well.

Pray for Claudia as she begins working alongside Shamim, the new counsellor at Rugarama. Pray also for up and coming meetings with those involved in developing the HIV care.

Pray for Leo and Bethany at school this week.

Pray for good health for all the family, especially Craig.

This week sees the kids back at school. Please pray they settle in well, especially Bethany who would much rather stay at home and play with her dolly :-)

Craig and Emmy continue to visit various local Councillors, to look at potential springs that need repairing or building. Please pray for discernment in choosing the right water projects to work on.

Claudia will be back at Rugarama Hospital this week and also at home working on the Sunday School Curriculum. Pray for her as she continues to work on these resources.

Please also pray for Craig's health, as he is still suffering with some chest pains.

All schools go back this week, for the final term before the Christmas holidays:

Please pray for the clergy and spouses' at Bishop Barham College this week. Claudia taught this afternoon on the subject of Children's ministry. Pray for the clergy as they go back to their churches and how they practically implement improvements to their Sunday school programme. Pray also for the distribution of the Sunday school curriculum. It was encouraging to know one man is taking a copy back to Rwanda :-)

Pray for Craig and Emmy as they continue to meet with Councillors regarding the water projects - particularly the repairing and building of springs in the sub-county.

Pray for a solution to the the challenge of the project selling cabbages. The market is over run with cabbages at present and this is making it very difficult for project members to sell their produce.

Pray for Craig's health as he continues teaching at NTC for the primary upgrading course.

Continue to pray for the children during their holiday period.

Well we are definitely back into the swing of things now, even though we've only been back in Kabale two weeks!

Craig is back teaching at Kabale University and NTC - please pray for him as he plans his lessons and teaches.

Claudia has already been able to distribute 20 copies of the Sunday School Curriculum at a conference last weekend - praise God for that opportunity and that those who have received it, will find it useful as they teach.

Leo and Bethany are now off school for a month - please pray we'll be able to entertain them. Having been three months in the UK, we've forgotten how little there is to do here in Kabale.

Pray for the Councillors that Craig and Emmy met with this week to discuss potential water projects.

Pray for Claudia as she prepares to speak at the Clergy and Spouse course at Bishop Barham College on Monday.

Thanks for praying for the family over the last 3 months. We are now back and settling back into life in Kabale.

Please pray for all of us as we settle back into Kabale life with all's it's joys and frustrations (we've already had two power cuts since we got back).

Pray for the children as they attend school this week before breaking for more holiday time on Friday.

Pray for Craig, Emmy, George, Alfred and Elias as they meet to discuss project matters.

Pray for Craig's continued good health and the rest of the family too :-)

Praise God that having attended Sunday School yesterday at All Saints, we found they had been using the Sunday School curriculum over the last 3 months away. This was very encouraging news!

Please pray for the family as we pack and tie up loose ends here in Kabale (Craig has some teaching to finish :-) )and then travel to Kampala on Thursday, ready for flying on Friday night.

Pray for Craig as he continues to recover and 'tries' to take it a bit easy.

Praise God for a successful training day with Sunday School Teachers from Barare on Saturday - there was around 40 teachers and about 20 Churches represented - who all recieved curriculum.

Praise God for Craig's continued recovery.

On Tuesday Craig was admitted to Rugarama Hospital with suspected typhoid and possibly malaria.
For our facebook followers I managed to send out a prayer request and finally now - day 3, made it to the blog :-)

First to say:
Praise God that Craig is finally making progress and is feeling much today.
We thank God for a good nights sleep last night and that Craig was able to eat this morning.
We thank God for Dr Aaron and other staff who have been looking after Craig and that the treatment is showing outward signs of returning to Craig to good health.

Please continue to pray for Craig's recovery. We are due to travel to Kampala on Thursday next week for a flight back to the UK on Friday. Pray for a postive recovery, rest and recooperation over the next week.

Please also pray for good health for all of us in the lead up to departure.

Please pray for Leo who has strep throat again :-( He's taking antibiotics but is feeling a bit sorry for himself. It's the last day of school tomorrow and not sure whether he'll miss it or not yet. He'd like to go in, to get his end of term report and say goodbye to his friends before heading back to the UK.

Please pray for Craig, he's been feeling unwell since the weekend. Pray that he would recover quickly and be able to finish the teaching he needs to before the end of term.

Pray for Craig, Emmy, George and Julius as they organise project members in mass cabbage harvesting! Today we hope to fill a truck to transport all the project members cabbages to Kamapala. Pray that the harvesting; packing and transporting goes smoothly.

Tuesday 15th
Pray for Emmy, George and Julius as they travel to Kampala and sell cabbages. Pray for a good market and good profits.

Claudia maybe speaking to a HIV support group today - she awaits to phone call to confirm. Pray that the meeting will go well.

Prayer Points 9th November 2010

Today Claudia started counselling at Rugarama Hospital. Pray for her to build positive relationships with staff as she sets up the counselling service. Pray also that the doctors and nurses would assist her in referring patients to her, as the service starts ups in these early weeks. Pray for her as she finds her way around the hospital, understands the culture of how the hospital works and finds the best way forward to make counselling available to both patients and staff.

Pray for Craig and Emmy, they have both been very busy with the water aspect of the community project. Today saw them making several trips up to Bukoora with a lorry of bricks and sand. Pray for clear communication with community leaders and members, as they establish committees to monitor the various water tanks; springs etc. Pray also for mutual co-operation as agreements are reached in the management of the water provision. Thank God for the opportunities to work with communities in the this way.

Pray for Craig as he balances his teaching commitments at NTC and Kabale university with the busyness of the project. Pray also for his Saturday bible study with students going through the Old Testament.

Claudia meets with NTC students on Friday for Peer Counselling Training - pray for a productive time together. She also meets with another group on Sunday for training in Sunday School teaching skills.

Leo is registering for P1 (1st year of Primary school) on Thursday next week (18th) please pray the registration goes smoothly.

We have also just booked our flights for home leave, pray for us a family as we plan and prepare and organise our time before and during home leave.

Please pray that we would be able to continue to source Rukiga Bibles. They have recently increased dramatically in price from 15,000 shillings to 22,000 shillings. This makes it even more difficult for people to buy them. Pray that we would be able to find ones that are more affordable.

Saturday 17th September A day in Bukoora making a mud house and finishing off the new storehouse. All the new members are coming, so around 40 to cook for. Charity is coming to help Claudia cook :-)

Sunday 18th September: Claudia is leading Sunday school. Craig is visiting a spring to check progress and assist again! In the afternoon Claudia is leading the monthly Sunday School Teacher training.

Monday 19th September: A busy day for Craig as he is teaching at both NTC and Kabale University.

Wednesday 21st September: Another busy day for Craig teaching at NTC, Kabale Uni and Ndorwa Sec Sch. Claudia begins teaching Guidance Counselling at NTC and registering students for Peer Counselling training which should start next week.

Sunday 25th September: Hopefully a quiet day :-)

Pray also for Claudia as she begins working with Immaculate on translating curriculum into local language. Claudia won't be doing the translation but will be meeting regularly with Immaculate to discuss how the material can be presented in a way which is most helpful to Rukiga speaking Ugandans.

Claudia is preaching at All Saints on Sunday during the Thanksgiving Service for Sunday School. Pray as she prepares to preach and helps to prepare the children to take part in the service.

Claudia's Sunday school curriculum (2 yrs at present) is now available at the Diocese bookshop. Pray for Rev Friday and Patience as they seek to advertise that the material is available. Pray that the material will be useful to the teachers and assist in developing Sunday school in the diocese.

Craig and Emmy as they visit springs to check on progress and repair work.

Craig is teaching at the NTC on the primary upgrading course and also has marking to do.

Emmy - Praise God for him passing through to the final election which will take place in February, for the post of LC5 councillor. Pray for Emmy as he balances his studies at Kabale University, managing the project and new water projects (repairing springs). Pray for him as he takes on new leadership responsibilities - for good management skills, continued positive relationships within the communities he works in and wisdom in his decision making.

Leo and Bethany - still have two weeks left of holiday. Pray they'll continue to enjoy time together and for new friends. We have heard there are some new families moving to Kabale this coming month with children, we look forward to making contact.

Claudia is speaking at the Clergy & Spouse training at Bishop Barham on Monday 16th and Wednesday 18th this week. She'll be speaking on the Biblical Principles of Children's ministry as well as leading more practical workshops on teaching children from the Bible.

Claudia also continues to work on the 3 year Sunday school curriculum.

Leo and Bethany are now on holiday for a month :-) Pray for them as the Slater boys, who they often play with have now moved to Kampala and the Davis boys have returned to the UK after their 3 weeks with us. Things are a little quiet on the friends front.

Outreach Events

We are having two outreach events in Bukoora: This Sunday (15th) and Sunday 22nd.
We shall be showing a DVD of the life of Jesus in the local language (Rukiga) and then a good friend of ours - Wyclef - will be explaining the gospel and giving a chance for people to respond, again all in Rukiga.

Please pray for no rain (rains due to start this weekend!)
For good attendance and that God would really speak to the people that come.

Sunday 18th July - Fund raising event at church in Bukoora and opportunity to meet minister who may be able to assist with Bakiga Community Project. Claudia is training Sunday school teachers in the afternoon.

Monday 19th July - Claudia is speaking at Bishop Barham University on the subject of children's ministry. Pray the subject will be received well and promote discussion and development of children's ministry in the churches the trainee pastors have their placements.

Craig is currently on school practice and visiting various schools in Kabale. Pray for him as he supervises the students, giving them feedback on their lessons.

Claudia is spending the next three weeks attempting to finalise the Three Year Sunday school curriculum, she is working on for local churches (see more info on the blog).

Please pray for the project members fields. Last week George's cabbage and potatoes fields were stolen from, which were a significant loss to the contribution they will make to his university fees. Pray that the fields would be protected from theft during these last few weeks before harvest time. The thief was caught, so please also pray for the Sub-county who will decide his punishment.

An opportunity has opened for Claudia to teach at Bishop Barham next week, Please pray as she waits to hear if this will happen.

Wednesday 5th May: Day at Bukoora building Pauline's House. Pray that we are able to nail on the iron sheets and complete the outer mud walls, so Pauline and her children can move back into their new house.

Thursday 6th & Friday 7th May: Craig is teaching at NTC on the primary upgrade course.

Saturday 8th May: The Official Opening of the Water Tank. The Project is organising a traditional party to officially open the tank. This will also be an opportunity to raise the profile of the project and fund-raise with local people who attend including MP's and local leaders.

Monday 12th April
Claudia leads training day for church leaders on counselling people who are HIV+. Pray for her and Annie (a Ugandan counsellor) who are leading the day. Pray for the participants that it would be a informative and practical day for everyone involved.

Tuesday 13th April
Claudia assists SPEAR (Supporting Public Sector workplace to Expand Action and Response to HIV AIDS) as they offer HIV testing to students at NTC.

Thursday 15th April
Craig and Emmy organise project members in the first stage of rebuilding a house in Bukoora. The house belongs to a woman who has been abandoned by her husband and left to look after their four children. The house is in complete disrepair with large holes in the walls which are literally crumbing to the ground.

Friday 16th April

There is much harvesting happening at the moment - Oscar's field was harvested on Monday. Wednesday Craig is helping to harvest Emmy's field of potatoes and by the end of the week another field of cabbages will be harvested. Please pray for a good market for all the crops as it has been a real challenge to sell some of the produce in January. Prices have been low, which has meant profits are low but school fees are now due for many project members - it's a challenging time.

Craig is due to have a meeting with the headmaster of Kigezi High School regarding providing training for maths teachers. Pray the meeting will take place soon and a dates for training can be put in the diary.

Claudia starts counselling for two mornings a week at NAFODU (national foundation for democracy and human rights in Uganda). She'll also be speaking about counselling on the local radio next Monday along with Joseline and Cleophas, two other women she'll be working with.

Leo and Bethany are both at school now. Please pray Bethany will settle well and make friends. Pray also for Leo as he goes to top class and stays at school for the whole day 8.30 - 4.30.

Please pray for Craig and Emmy as they organise harvesting of the fields over the next month. Pray also for wisdom to handle difficult situations that arise including members not willing to work.

Pray for the Project Leaders and those in key roles: Emmy the project manager, Jorem assistant project manager, Elias the project advisor, Willy the new secretary and Brian who has the job of ensuring members know what fields we are currently working in.

Pray for the project as we begin the new year with new members, pray that we would find the members to be hardworking and trustworthy.

Claudia speaks at the Children's conference over the next three days. Pray for her as she speaks but pray also for the children as they hear the message, that they would respond positively and we would see some becoming Christians for the first time.

Craig begins teaching again tomorrow, Tuesday, on the primary upgrading course.

Claudia continues to prepare for the Children's conference in January - pray for creativity as she prepares three bible studies on Joseph for 6-12 yr olds.

The water tank building continues to progress. Pray that the those in the village will be motivated to assist in the carrying sand this week as the engineer tries to complete the tank.

Pray for Craig as he meets for the headmaster of Kigezi High School regarding preaching at the school chapel in February and doing some teacher training.

Pray also that we would be able to find a window to have a bit of a break away from Kabale. We haven't been out of Kabale since August and we could do with a change of scene to refresh us:-)

Craig is running a Bible Study for students on their Christmas holidays today (2nd Dec) at the church we attend - All Saints Church Kabale.

Leo and Bethany are on their Christmas holidays now - for two months. Pray we can keep them busy and entertained :-)

The Water Tank project is under way but we are still fundraising, so do pray funds will come in. Pray for the engineer as he builds and organises those involved in the construction of the tank. Pray for the villagers to come and assist in shifting sand, bricks and other manual labour which is required.

Pray for Claudia as she begins preparations for the Children's Conference (6- 12yr olds) happening in January - she has three talks to prepare as well as three Bible Studies. Pray for creativity as looks at how to present her talks and prepare the Bible Study notes for the teachers to use in their small group bible studies.

An uncertain week lies ahead as technically the end of term should be Friday 27th November but experience tells us that students often leave before the end of term so it may not be as busy as we anticipate.

Claudia will be leading her third Sunday School teacher training workshop on Sunday, looking at how to plan a Sunday School lesson. Please pray for good attendance and practical application of what is taught.

On Monday Claudia will be leading session 2 of the Peer Counselling Training - pray for the 36 students who are attending that they will enjoy the practical nature of the course and learn skills which will help them to help others.

Pray for Helen (Charity's daughter) and Bethany on Wednesday that they will enjoy the time playing together when Claudia is at work.

Pray for Craig and Emmy as they plan and organise materials and labour for the water tank that will be built in Bukoora.

~ Pray for Craig who cut his head on a metal gate and had to have stitches :-( The doctor did a good job in patching him up but needless to say the pain relieve wasn't as effective as a UK hospital - ouch! Pray that it would heal quickly, with no complications.

October Activities

Claudia will be visiting another HIV/Aids support group on Saturday 3rd October and Thursday 15th October (tbc), please pray as she gives her talk, 'Hope in Suffering'.
Craig is writing a proposal to run training workshops for qualified maths teachers in Kabale, pray the proposal is received well and progress in made in actually seeing them happen.
Pray for the project as everyone is in full swing planting as the rains have arrived.
Pray for good health and safety on the roads as once the rains come, the road become muddy and more pot holed than normal.

Sunday School Conference: This is being organised by the diocese and I have been asked to speak. At present I am due to talk on: Biblical Principles of Children's Ministry; How to Plan a Sunday School lesson and How to Make Teaching Aids. I hope to receive a programme before the conference which is happening from 14th August - 18th August. Please pray for the Sunday school committee organising the conference; the speakers and the Sunday school teachers who are attending. I have quite a lot to do before next weeks conference, so pray that I'll be able to be organised but make time to be creative in how I present my topics.

Marking Again!: Craig has just been given a vast quantity of marking to be done, please pray for him as he ploughs through. It is quite tiring as often the mark schemes he is given need to be carefully looked at and checked before he can begin. Unlike the UK computerised system, all the scripts are marked individually by hand.

Ivan: Ivan is heading up to Kampala on Friday to find accommodation for the new academic year. Pray for him as he travels up and seeks to find low cost accommodation that has easy access to the university.

Wheat: There is much wheat harvesting in the various fields at the moment, please pray for good health for all involved as it is quite demanding work. Emmy over did it this week and hurt his hands, so please pray for him. Also pray as we go about selling the wheat flour, that we would get a good price and profits would be good - especially as several of the fields have had a poor harvest due to lack of rain this season.

Nancy and Queen

It was good to hear both Nancy and Queen have now returned home. Although not keen to return to school, they are wanting to study tailoring. We along with Emmy (Queen's brother) visited a vocational training school in Kabale and they have both been accepted to start in the new academic year. Please pray for both of them as they commitment two years of study, which will start in February 2010. Pray they will remain patient and be supportive of their brothers (Emmy and Joram) who are both involved in the community project.

Praise God the babies have arrived!
Ambrose and Hilda had a baby girl about 2 weeks ago.
Oscar and Joy had a baby boy, Jeremiah, on Friday 10th July. Joy had to have a c-section but all went well. We visited them today in Kabale Hospital and both Joy and Jeremiah are doing really well. Jeremiah is very tiny and as usual with babies feeding alot!
Sarah and John are still waiting, so do pray especially for Sarah who has been a little unwell.

Claudia is still waiting for communication from the Diocese regarding Sunday School Teacher training, though she has been told there will be a conference at the end of July. Pray the way ahead will become clear.

Craig and Claudia have both been approached to assist Kigezi High School in town with 1) Maths teacher training 2) Organising of a Pastoral Care System. Pray that this opportunity may develop and that they will both be used in productive ways. The school does a lot of work with scripture union.

Craig begins supervising teachers on their Teaching Practice this month, pray for safety and ease of travel as he visits various different schools, some in quite rural locations.Pray the observations would be useful and that helpful evaluation can be made of the teachers he monitors.

Pray for Jimmy (Brother of Emmy) who is struggling to stay in school even though fees are available through the project. Pray also for his sister Queen who has now returned home but does not want to attend school. Pray for both of them as they work out there futures.

Pray for the family as we attend the Kumbya Retreat at Lake Kivu, Rwanda at the end of July. Pray for spiritual refreshment and good teaching, as well of fun and relaxation.

Babies

We heard the sad news that Ronald's (from the community project)sister died last week. There were complications during delivery and she died along with the twins she was carrying. Please pray for her husband and two older children, along with Ronald and the family at this time.
Two couples we know are expecting babies in the next few months: Joy and Oscar (we think are due this month) and John and Sarah (sometime in September). Please pray for good health for the mothers and safe delivery of the babies.

our time here and we really want to hear more clearly from God how he wants us to use the time. We want to be open to his directions and plans and only spend ourselves in ways that achieve his plans for our time here.

Visas – process has moved on quite a bit, but we still only have extended visas until January. I had to return to Kampala again this week to sort out another issue. Please pray the remaining things will get sorted and the work permits granted without need for any further trips to Kampala (which take 7 hours each way!) and disrupt my teaching.

Both Claudia and I have started teaching. Claudia teaches just one class a week, but it is 400 – so quite a challenge for her first teaching role! Please pray for good relationships with students and for us to see how we can both be involved in supporting them. Teaching conditions are quite challenging with large classes, very few resources and disintegrating classrooms! We also hope to get involved with the Christian Union – again wisdom and opportunities on how we can best work with them.

Claudia will also soon start a counselling service at the college – please pray for her as she sets this up and that it will be well received. We are also in the process of getting to know staff.

Claudia is now working regularly with the Sunday school at church and we both continue to explore how we can best be used in the church. Please pray for the right opportunities that we can best meet the needs of the church in what ever areas they need. We are particularly keen to be involved in training people at the church.

Leo continues to settle at his school, but does have days when he finds it quite tough. Please pray for him as he makes friends and finds his feet there, being the only white pupil.

Work Permits

We have now returned again to Kampala to try to sort out our work permits. Please pray the paperwork is now all acceptable and that authorities here will be as helpful as possible in processing the permit. We are supposed to start work this week and our tourist visas expire in 10 days, so we really need things to get sorted this time!

We should also start working at the college next week. Please pray for this time as we begin our roles and find our feet. Meeting and working alongside students and staff and changing to a different routine. Claudia needs to make decisions about exactly how much counselling she will do and the nature of her role at the college.

Work Permits

We will be going to Kampala next week to try to organise our work permits. Currently we are here on tourist visas, valid until mid October. We will take a letter from the NTC principal to the education commissioner in Kampala and from there to the immigration people. It turns out our landlord is also a commissioner and has said he will help - thank God! Please pray all goes smoothly including the drive up there and that there will be no need for a return trip.

Craig's Throat
